A long, long, time ago, man invented the snowmobile and decided to put a leaf-spring suspension on it.  Fast forward to around 1980 man then decided to put a decent suspension on a snowmobile with a real coil shock, which we lovingly referred to as an Independent Front Suspension (IFS)*.  At the same time, man salted the roads to the equivalent of the Bonneville Salts Flats causing our shocks to rust from the salt spray due to towing. The owners of said snowmobile would then leave their sleds outside for the summer thus completing the deterioration of these shocks.

Northern Shock Supply can make those shocks look new again!
