Xtra 10 & 12 Restoration

Suspensions – the neglected sled component – out of sight out of mind.  The consequence of that is these things have turned into quasi piles of junk on most “vintage” sleds. The X10 & X12 generation is coming up on 30 years so no wonder things are bleak.  Polaris et al did not do anyone any favors by not providing a reasonable way for the consumer to R&R these things (other than see your dealer) without the associated cuss words by the owner.

The usual problems:

  • Frozen shafts – compliments of plugged grease zerks – or simply non maintenance.
  • Cracked components which require welding.
  • Bolts that freeze solid (apparently stainless steel wasn’t available in those days).
  • Idler wheel bearings - 100% will be shot.
  • Industrial NASA-grade Loctite on bolts that need removing – thus the pleasure of the “spinning shaft”.
  • Bushing that wear-out, oh, what bushings? In the rare case these things were actually greased ever ponder why the grease is that grey paste? Because the aluminum shaft is grinding away destroying itself.
  • Of course, the hyfax is worn out.

Northern Shock Supply can service that skid. From just getting it back to working order to a show sled. Prices range from $500 to $1k+, that includes our complete shock restoration.  We will work on other suspensions on a case-by-case basis but specialize on the X10 & X12 as we have most replacement parts and if necessary, the used market has readily available parts. Expect 4-6 week turnaround.

On the X10 & X12 there are 14 pivot points each - plus spring sliders - no wonder this is friction central. Considering these skids are coupled, most of those 14 pivots are in motion on every bump, happily grinding themselves away.  Then we store them wet and they freeze solid. We have a couple of options:

1. We can Oring the shaft, this helps keep the water out and the lube in. At this point we also machine down the center of the shaft to reduce friction, the shafts only wear on the outer 2" or so due to the "rocking" of the mounting tubes.  Depending on the skid service price point this may be included.

2. We can install Delrin bushings. Back in 1991 we "invented" this and it's been the go-to for a premium ride.  Named the ProShaft, a sled so equipped actually won the I-500. Lube, no lube, it's all OK. Never one wear-out reported.

Prices (stand alone - each)
Oring & machine shaft, $15
ProShaft; 3/4" OD shafts, $30, 1.1" shafts, $40
